  Winter in Tahoe

When winter snows cover the Lake Tahoe Basin a new energy overtakes both the local resident and visitor alike. For outdoor enthusiasts winter is all about enjoying the magical sporting landscape in the mountains and valleys surrounding the lake. The skiing and snowboarding in the Tahoe Basin is arguably the best in the west! With an average snowfall of 409 inches and 15 downhill resorts, Lake Tahoe is a veritable winter wonderland. Beautiful sunshine, deep powder snow, challenging terrain parks and long groomed ski runs abound at all the resorts. There are also 10 cross-country centers, four snowmobile touring companies, sledding hills and even sleigh riding. Please check the activity book in your Tahoe Woods home for the most updated contact info.

All around the Tahoe Basin winter sport lovers enjoy downhill skiing or snowboard riding, cross-country skiing, ice skating, snowmobile touring, and snowshoeing. Since these sports are so popular, and because the wilderness areas are so large, there are many trails or special areas for their individual use.

  Heavenly Ski Resort

A South Shore favorite for over 40 years, Heavenly Ski Resort is home to some of the best tree-skiing in the west, and is Lake Tahoe's largest ski resort, with 91 runs on nine mountain peaks and an impressive 3,500-foot vertical drop. The altitude at the top of Sky Chair is 10,077 feet. The average snowfall at Heavenly is 360 inches.

Both the Heavenly California and Nevada lodges are located only minutes away from our Tahoe Woods homes. The new owners of Heavenly, quality-obsessed Vail Resorts, has recently added seven high-speed quads, three restaurants and lots of little extras like free water and an expanded menu. New for this year is an entire back bowl area to be known as "wells fargo". We're not sure how it received that name, but the terrain is incredible and scenic.

Season passes for 2009 are only $349, one of the best bargains around. The Olympic Express chair has opened up new terrain on the Nevada side. There has been $5 million in new improvements this year alone. The Heavenly ski season starts Nov. 18 and runs until April 23rd.

On a sunny powder day, especially in the spring, Heavenly is really the place to be. There are an estimated 300 days of sunshine in the Tahoe Basin per year, so it is not uncommon to get a powder dump overnight and wake up to a blue sky skiing day! Plus, Heavenly boasts easy access, several wonderful snowboard parks, the legendary tree skiing, and unparralled scenery. Soak up the sun and fun at Heavenly this winter!
